Hi Ingo On your point 1): yes, I am referring to situations when journals do not allow you to submit online appendices for peer review. Maybe next time I should insist and clarify that I want to submit the appendix for review even if it will not be put online on the journal website. But more general...

Hi Alrik Personally, if someone tells me what I write is overly complex or unclear, I try to address such concerns because reaching and convincing the reader is my goal Nr. 1. But yours are precisely the arguments that justify why some of this information might be better placed in an online appendix...

Just three points of clarification: I was not seeking advice on how to respond to referees (I AM an applied researcher, and trust me, it is rarely that simple in practice), but illustrating why it is important that journals...
